๐ŸŽ‰ Lots of new features and improvements for the summer!

Including:

  • Flip Sign: If your spreadsheet or a connected bank send a wrong sign for all transactions? You can toggle "flip sign" in the account edit page to fix it.
  • 50/30/20 Category Template: We have created a new 50/30/20 category template to help you implement the 50/30/20 rule in Fina. Read this blog post for how ZBB can be implemented in Fina.
  • Rule w/ Time Constraint: Now, you can set a time constraint for any rule, so that it only applies to transactions within a specific time range. By default, rules applied to all transactions.
  • Manual Transaction: You can now add a manual transaction in Fina, which is useful when you want to track a transaction that is not available in your bank account or spreadsheet.
  • Merchant Management: We have added a new module called "Merchant Management" where you can manage your merchants - renaming merchants to clean up messy merchants.
  • Schedule Management: Fina has a new module called "schedule management" where you can manage schedules for recurring transactions. You can create, edit, and delete schedules in this module, as well as produce, view or delete all transactions created by a schedule.
    • Recurring Detection: You can now detect recurring transactions from your existing transactions, and create schedules from there by a couple of clicks.
  • Future View: With recurring transactions, you can finally see your future transctions, upcoming bills, and projected cash flow of future! Pin this special template to your Fina pages.

Most importantly, we have upgraded Fina Partner Program:

  1. Continue 20% recurring commission for every new user you refer to Fina.
  2. New 10% commission for every new user you refer to Fina.
  3. No need to share Fina url, just share your referral code, it is your partner ID available in your setting page.

  • Emoji in Fina Page: Easy to add horizontal line and emojis in any page. (type 3 dashes and space for horizontal line, and :{name}: for a possible emoji.
  • Fina Metric Format: Every formula metric can now choose value format in its definition: Money, Percent or just Number.

๐Ÿ‚ August is approaching to its end, hope everyone had a great summer! ๐Ÿ‚ Here are some great updates from Fina:

  • Share categories with people to copy: category setup is the foundation to build your own financial tracking system, while you implement your philosophy on Fina, you can share it so that others can one-click to copy yours. That's a good way to become a leader, see some sharing here.
  • Improved Budget block: we have spent very much time thinking how to make budget block more intuitive and easy to use. Please check out the new budget block. Your existing one should be auto updated. Or you can import Basic Budgeting template from Templates gallery.
  • Better Mobile view: we promise to build a great mobile app in the future, but now, we will continue optimize our mobile view so that you can still use it on your phone browser.
  • Transaction Review: transaction review is a feature you can turn on in the profile setting. This feature gives you chance to review all new transactions, so that you clearly know what transactions to review and mark them as reviewed. This feature is turned off by default.
  • Better Date Picker: it is a small thing but it is also big, we use date picker all the time, we hope the improvement makes it smooth for you when dealing with date ranges.
  • Page Editing: we fixed some bugs in page editing, such as block copy/paste in page, title editing, etc. In addition, we have added page clone feature where you can duplicate a page easily by hover over and click clone icon.

In this period of time, the engineering team has spent time mostly on

  1. adding the second aggregator in addition to Plaid to cover more institutions. (eg. Fidelity) - stay tuned for the announcement soon!
  2. making a bunch of reliability fixes to make Fina run not only fast but also smoothly.

A couple of highlights to mention:

We have trained an internal ML model to categorize your transactions importing from spreadsheet. So if you want Fina to auto categorize them, just leave the category column empty in the linked Spreadsheet. If you set the value to one of your Fina category, then it is not overwritten.

First time loading time should be improved quite a bit - the loading time when you sign in Fina.

Guess what is coming up in the next update? Formula: we will allow you to define and write formula for any block you put on the page. Potentially you will never think of Excel/Spreadsheet anymore after that!!

Our latest release includes a few exciting features to your notice:

  • Profile sharing: now you can easily share and import categories and rules from one profile to another, within Fina account or across Fina accounts, as a creator, if you want people follow your category setup, just share it and let people import it by providing the shared ID.
  • More currencies : newly added are ILS (Israel Shekel) and ZAR (South African Rand). If you need your native currency to be supported, just ask or file a request. Thanks!

In the past month, we have done a lot to improve Fina's reliability, we constantly make Fina easier to use, free of bugs while maintaining 100% flexibility to allow you build your custom tracking system on Fina.

Here are some highlights we think you may like

  • Quick search in all surfaces: accounts, transactions, categories, and rules. Especially useful on transactions page.
  • Categorization in transaction drawer. Transaction drawer list all transactions when you click any aggregated number across Fina, such as category list, page blocks, now you can change category directly from the transaction list shown in the drawer, no need to go back to Transactions tab to do so.
  • Video block is back, you can insert a video block in Fina page again, it supports youtube link only. Just click block edit and paste youtube link to host your video in the block.
  • Group view You can easily add a category list view to display inflow or outflow, along side with budgets. Now, with the group view toggle, you can choose displaying group view or category view, group view sum up values from its category list.
  • Fina AI Tags classifies all transactions using its internal AI classes, then applies your categorization rules include manual category set on specific transaction. To make categorization even easier, now you can choose mapping Fina AI classes into your own categories, so that auto categorization do the right work at most of the time.
  • Session timeout many users mentioned that Fina log out them due to inactive session, but they want stay longer so that they don't need to log in too often. Now you can set your own session timeout in your profile setting, by default it's 30 minutes, you can change it up to 12hours.

Fina Essential is 99% ready now. In this milestone, we made a long time investment to make the essential workflow smooth with great experience. To make more people know Fina and get value of it, we have published a new price plan at $5/m which only covers the cost of live connections we have pay for.

We have published 4 newly minted templates to cover most of the essential scenarios:

  1. onboarding
  2. budgeting
  3. cashflow
  4. net worth

They will be cloned in to every new user's document library as the welcome kit. For any existing users, you can find them in the Templates gallery, feel free to import them any time with a single click.

We hope every essential user find the joy in building your own category system, easily categorize your transactions, including add remark, changing date, split transaction or add rules to auto categorize future transactions.

๐ŸŽƒ Happy Halloween, Fina family! As usual, we still have a bunch exciting updates to share with you!

  • Accounts Now you can disable an account if you want to exclude it. Transactions table size For small screen, Fina used to cut off what it should display, now we have introduced horizontal scroll bar if needed.

  • "Category Expense" Block We have added two options in the settings of this block:

  1. compare to category budget
  2. compare to an income category budget.

The first option will display how much remaining current expense from its own budget set.

The second option will display how much percentage current expense is taking of a selected income category. Thanks for the idea, @Farooq!

  • Categories Categories tab is one of the core surfaces that our Fina users use the most, we will continue improving this surface.
  1. Enhanced Drag & Drop: drag & drop an category to another place made easier, and now you can drop it to the position you want within a group.
  2. We have disabled the default sorting by income/expense amount, so that you can keep your category tree in the order you designed it to be. In the future, we will introduce extra options to allow you sort them.
  3. Snapshots: you can save the state of your categories and rules into a snapshot which you can restore to it later in case something is messed up after that. Up to 3 snapshots are allowed and you can rename each to help you memorize what they are!

  • Rename a Category Before the support - all transactions may become uncategorized if you rename a category from X to Y. Now, renaming should smoothly attach all transaction to the new category name when you rename. Tell us how it works for you through Feedback.

  • Audit Rules After some time, you may have created a bunch of rules to categorize your transaction data, some of them may become obsolete, we introduced a new Audit button on Rules page, it will highlight the rules that is not working anymore, you may want to clean them up.

  • ๐Ÿ’ฅ Predict Budget Now, Fina provides a one-click button to predict your budget value for each category: when you hover over a category item, a shortcut will show up by side of the budget input, click it and Fina will predicate your budget based on the past few months expense, try it out and let us know how it works for you!

  • (Better) Drag & Drop At Fina, we always take step by step to improve the experience. Now we offer a better indicator of drag handle

  • Sort by Name Expense by Category block is so far the most popular one in Fina - please open block settings menu to check all the options we have added:

  1. Along with Budget: display budget side by side with expense
  2. Group only: instead of displaying individual category, it rolls up everything into group level only, categories in root will be aggregated to (ungrouped).
  3. View as Card: tired of list view? Try card view!
  4. Sort by Name: by default, categories are sorted by its expense amount value, this option will sort it by name in alphabetical order instead.

  • Drag & Drop category What makes it difficult to re-organize your category list? I heard people said they have to delete and re-create if they want to move category around.

Now, you can just drag and drop! Give kudos to those people who gave this feedback! Ungroup

Now, you can also click "ungroup" icon on a group to ungroup it, all categories and the group itself will become plain categories now just under the ROOT.

  • Simple Calculator We are revamping the simple calculator to get ready for complicated computation with variables, before that, we will keep polishing the calculator to make it work better. Check it out and let us know how it feels... Stay tuned for more!

  • Time Zone More on transaction timezone: have you ever noticed some of your transaction date is one-day off?

We have tried the best to recognize the accurate time when there is signal to tell

  1. Time zone info
  2. Transaction type.

However, reality is much more complex than we can handle gracefully, because all banks may behavior differently. Some banks send UTC time while others send their local time. Fina has no way to tell how to adjust your time correctly in those cases. So now, we introduced Time Zone settings for each account, where you can set it up by Edit Account menu item on each account's option menu. Note that, one connected bank share the same time zone settings across all associated accounts, so regardless what account you edit, the Time Zone value applies to all.

  • Transaction Time Some users noticed Fina uses post date for transaction, however different merchant (and banks) posts the records at different time. So we are trying to bring your transaction time as close as the time you made the real-life action, regardless your bank uses UTC time or your local time. Let's know if you see more aligned transaction time for your Fina transactions.

  • Unique URL We have added the unique URL for each profile, as well as its sub-pages: accounts, transactions, and categories

  • Keyboard We have improved transaction categorization more for keyboard-only users, now if you type something not existing in your category, you can use UP/DOWN arrow to navigate and add new category, you're able to choose group for new added category as well.

  • Transaction List Transaction list is now available in many surfaces. Basically, whenever you want to drill down a number, a transaction list will show up as a side drawer. For example: an "activity" icon will appear by a category, no matter you see them in a page block or categorization page. Going forward, you will be able to see them by the side of a "Merchant", or more. What is your "drill-down" scenario, please file a request using the "Bugs & Requests" link.

  • Filters The filters on transactions page will allow you easily search your transactions by some conditions, more than that, you shall be able to create a rule from a filter list easily.

  • See category activities Showing transactions from Category tab will carry the time range over from Category tab to Transaction tab.

  • Accounts/Transactions/Categories column head We now use active colors to indicate that the column is editable, such as Name column in Accounts tab, Category column in Transactions tab, and Category + Budget columns in Categories, others are grey means read-only.

  • Change log bell Change log menu will display bell if we have updates as fresh as less than 24 hours. We would like you take a look at our active updates.

  • Onboarding page & Starter page: If you are new to Fina, now you will automatically get these two templates applied in your document tree. Others can always go to Templates browser to see available ones. Looking forward to adding more templates.

  • Categorization optimization: We display all your categories in the Category column under Transactions tab, but based on the current transaction, either expense categories or income categories will show up at the top of the drop down list. Of course, you can always type and search.

Enhancement on Expense by Category block: Now, you can turn on "Budget" value side by side with expense value for better comparison.

Now, you can also turn on "Group only" view to aggregate all expenses into Group level only, group is the top-level categories in your category tree. Lastly, you can easily to switch Category Expense between List view and Card view now.

We understand Expense by Category is a very important block for many users, please stay tuned, we have many more polish and improvement coming up for this block, among those exciting updates, next step, we will bring category drill-down experience for you:

Click any category from the block result, you will get transaction details to show you how that number was calculated.

  • Multi-profiles "Multi-profiles" is a high-demanded feature asked by many of our beloved users. It helps you to separate your connected accounts into different profile, each profile has its own categories and rules. It makes many useful scenarios possible, such as: Separate your business accounts from your personal accounts. Create a profile for a specific family, such as your parents or your children. Build partnership with a loved one through a common profile.

Segment Link To support better navigation, we have enabled unique links for both Profile and Page, so now when you click and navigate to a profile or a page, you will get unique link at your browser address bar. By refreshing the browser, you will stay in the current page. Hope you like it!

AMEX improvement "Weโ€™ve made improvements to our AmEx integration and believe that the issue reported here is no longer affecting users with MFA settings that do not require perpetual multi-factor authentication. ย  Please note that this will continue to be a known issue/expected error for users who have perpetual multi-factor authentication set up on their account, an MFA type we do not support, as it prompts the user for an OTP code on every login, preventing our automated updates from collecting account data. ย  Additionally, Plaid has reached a data-sharing agreement with AmEx on Jun 8th and will be building out an OAuth integration for American Express. Once this effort is complete, we will migrate existing AmEx Items over to the new OAuth integration."

If you previously encountered connection issue with American Express, now it's time to give it another try and see if it works now. More improvements on American Expression will come live soon.

Fina Site Connectivity In the last few days, we have actively working on improving reliability and connection stableness on Fina. Reliability of changes saving. Some of our users experienced the issue of "changes loss", though different reasons may cause the similar problem. Our previous architecture has some problem to allow this happen. Now, we have revamped the way to save your changes, we use more frequent subtle server requests exchange for more incremental updates, we believe this will help a lot if you have had such issue before. Please contact support if you still have the issue, love to look into your case.

Multi-profile readiness Many users have asked for multi-profile feature, we have made effort to bring this feature to real soon. Currently we're looking for initial feedback and pilot users, if you are interested in multiple-profiles, please send a simple email to cao@fina.money, I'll reach out soon.

๐Ÿ”ฅ manual transaction is live now! ๐Ÿ”ฅ Finally we got approved by Google to integrate Fina with Google Spreadsheet, here are steps:

  1. User profile settings: Authorize with Google to allow Fina connect to your Google Spreadsheets!
  2. Make a copy of the template to your Google Spreadsheet list.
  3. Add a manual account in your personal profile, fill all the account info there, and paste the Google Spreadsheet ID in the "Transaction GSheet ID" field.
  4. Maintain all your transactions in your own Google Spreadsheet, and Fina will keep in sync with it (currently once a day).

Bugs & Requests To build Fina in a more transparent manner, we have a set up a public roadmap from where you can submit your bug report or feature request. We will action on them quickly.

All category filter should be memorized now across all blocks. Communication-only: for manual transaction, we are waiting Google verification on Fina integration with Google Spreadsheet. Stay tuned.

Edit block title: Now, you can edit any block's title in place, no need to go to block settings to that.

Add color to visualization: We have added some "colors" to any blocks with graph visualization. If you don't like it, please share you feedback with support@fina.money, we may revert it or add a a setting to your profile so that you can customize it.

Manual transactions: This is the biggest update but have to put it at last, because it's not available yet. We almost complete the Google Spreadsheet integration to allow you to pull transactions from your spreadsheet into Fina. However, it's still not working yet due to Google's integration approval. Once the verification process is done, we will let you know.

Networth historical view: Enabled historical view of your net-worth, so now you have 4 different views in Networth Insights block. (current, history) x (breakdown, summary). Balance history of all accounts are recorded every time you open Fina, currently it is not auto recorded. So sign in Fina often, :)

Bug fixes: Some bug fixes: budget progress when switching to quarterly time range, visualization tooltip background, promo-code auto send to your email when you left your phone number in your profile.

Offline Changes: I understand that some of our users got frustrated when you lost your changes due to Fina goes offline after you spent lots of effort to categorize your transactions. Now we have placed offline changes handling, it automatically saves your changes in your browser, after you refreshed the page to continue the session, those changes should be automatically saved.

Doc Delete Confirmation: Now, you will be prompted to confirm if you are deleting a doc from your pages. Just to be safe, avoid accidental operation!

Add New Category: Now, we enabled you to add a new category in the category dropdown in your categorization process. Just click the button + Add "xyz" when a category is not present.

Expand category section: Sometimes, you have a lot of categories in one section "expenses", "income" or "transfers", now you can use this quick button to expand it restore it, for convinces.

Ask question to Fina AI to match a block Ask generic question answered by Fina Query or AI itself.

View Change log: Now every user will be able to track and read Fina changes through Change log. Feel free to submit your feature request at Fina Canny page.
