Migrate from other apps
If you are coming from Monarch Money, Origin, Copilot, Simplifi, or YNAB, you can migrate historical transactions into Fina by exporting a CSV and linking it to a Google Sheet. Fina keeps a live connection to that sheet so updates stay in sync. Start with the Google Sheet doc to grab the template and review sync behavior.
Quick steps
- Export a CSV of your transactions from your current app.
- Paste the data into the Fina Google Sheet template.
- Link the sheet to Fina and sync.
Fina Google Sheet format
Fina reads headers by name (case-insensitive) from the first row. Only Date and Amount are required.
Accepted columns:
Date(required): ISO8601 like2023-10-01.Amount(required): number; use positive for inflow and negative for outflow.Name: payee or description.MerchantTypeorCategoryCurrency(ISO code likeUSD)CityRegionTagRemarksorNotes
Fina identifies transactions by Date + Amount + Name + Merchant, so changing those fields after linking will create a new transaction instead of updating the existing one.
Dates are parsed as UTC. If you see a 1-day shift, set a timezone offset in the account settings. See the Google Sheet doc for details.
Prepare your CSV in Google Sheets
- Make a copy of the Fina Google Sheet template (linked in the Google Sheet doc).
- Import your CSV into a new tab, then copy the values into the template columns.
- Normalize dates to
YYYY-MM-DD. - Normalize amounts: remove currency symbols/commas and ensure expenses are negative.
- Map columns using the guide below and delete unused columns to avoid confusion.
Common mappings:
PayeeorDescription->NameMerchant->MerchantCategory->TypeorCategoryMemoorNotes->RemarksInflowandOutflow->Amount(see below)
If your export uses Inflow and Outflow columns, create a single Amount column:
Amount = IF(LEN(Inflow) > 0, Inflow, -Outflow)
If you want Fina to auto-categorize, leave Type/Category blank.
Link the sheet to Fina
- Create a manual account (or open an existing one).
- Connect the Google Sheet to that account by following the steps in the Google Sheet doc.
- Trigger a sync and verify recent transactions.
